It is so much easier to type, cook, change diapers, shower, etc. I am a tad stiff but the dr is putting me on a 2 week course of steroids and told me to keep using it and I should be good in a few weeks.

We have a stomach virus going on around here with the kids. It started with Kara on Tuesday & now the boys have it. We have cancelled all plans this weekend to let them recoup. It is supposed to be a warm weekend so the fact that we have no plans is a welcomed surprise. Hopefully, they will feel good enough to go out and play tomorrow.

We had our first fire of the season last night. We grilled outside and then had smores. About 10 days ago, Libby decided to turn homicidal. Her plan did backfire and she only managed to cause a minor concussion and broken thumb/damaged ligaments by pushing me down the stairs. That was a nightmare but didn't seem to set me too far back in my training for the 5K Adam & I are running in May. I am not up to running about 4.5 miles on average (although yesterday I was just shy of 5 miles) and down 10 lbs. I have a goal for myself with the running and I am determined to meet those goals! I would like to try running a half marathon with Paul in November in Indianapolis.

Jack is doing EXCELLENT on his medications. He is really a different child. And, just as everyone told me, it feels like it was the best decision for us. He has expressed interest in earning his own money so he has 4 chores a day which he gets a sticker on a chart. At the end of the week, we will pay up. He has the ability to earn a dollar a day. I think for a 4 year old this is reasonable. He also wants a wallet to put his money in. I am giving him 1 for Valentines Day. He has been off school all week but goes back today. Just in time for his Valentines Day party. I made chocolate caramel covered pretzel rods with bits of toffee on the end for the students and teachers. He is also giving out Toy story cards with a sucker.

Grant took 2 unassisted steps the other day! He was very proud and its just a matter of time before he is off and walking for good. He is also magically sleeping better. He is sleeping 8 hours straight, waking for a bottle then back to bed for 4 or 5 more hours. I am limiting his nap time and think this is helping the sleeping situation.

Well Jack was officially diagnosed with ADHD. He started on medication on Wednesday. There has been no significant change but it is only a half dose while his body gets used to it. The first 2 days I had to crush half of a blue tablet and mix it with yogurt or applesauce. He did not like the blue color in his food. I was prepared to mix it in sugar free chocolate pudding but Karee decided to teach him to swallow pills. We bought a big bag of m&m's and told him he could have all the candy he wants if he didn't chew them. He got the hang of it pretty quickly. He even was able to start swallowing them without water. The next morning, he was so proud to be able to swallow his pill. That certainly takes the stress away from "is he eating it all?" "is Kara getting some of the food the pill is in?"

Grant is starting to stand on his own without holding onto anything. I am amazed every day how young he is to be doing this stuff. We saw a different pediatrician in the practice the other day and she feels Grant will be walking very soon.

Kara is doing pretty well these days. She isn't quite as mean to Grant as she used to be and is starting to share. She is speaking in sentences now and is starting to be just as funny as her big brother. Grant was crying and she told us that Grant was "crying in his mouth".

First wedding

Last night was our first time attending a wedding together. Within the next 6 months, we have 2 more coming up also. This wedding was for Karee's cousin, Kimmy, and her fiance Jacob. It was a beautiful wedding. Kimmy was stunning. The ceremony was 1 1/2 hours. The kids did pretty well. Karee did take Kara out to the cry area because her speaking voice is 1 volume level. At the reception, Kara had fun dancing. She danced almost the entire night. Grant enjoyed being around all of the people and getting passed around. The wedding started at 1:30pm and we got home a tad after 11pm. Jack was not with us last night though that was the only problem. We felt incomplete without our big bubbs. There were enough kids and family members to entertain our kids that Karee and I got a chance to drink and dance together. It was ALMOST like a nightout without the kids (which this Valentines day marks 1 year of our last time out without kids) but not quite. The kids did not nap and Grant did sleep through the night! Hallelujah for small miracles!

Update on the boys

My baby is 9 months old. He can stand alone for a few seconds at a time without holding onto furniture. He is so sweet and laid back. He has always been an energetic boy. The older he gets, the harder it is to control him. He gets so defiant or angry and it takes hours to get through to him. I have tried so many ways to try to get through to him including changing his diet and adding in various vitamins. We are in the beginning stages of diagnosing with ADD or ADHD. I am filling out papers for the pediatrican. Also being referred to a developmental specialist (although it will take months to get in) and a behaviorist. I am struggling just because it is beyond my control. The pediatrician alone may be able to prescribe medication if it is needed. I want to set him up for success and he's so funny and sweet..i want others to see those qualities in him as well. Not a wild boy who won't listen when he gets super excited. I am sure I will be blogging about this as it is a major part of my life at the moment.

Trip to Michigan

I really expected our first short trip to be pure hell. It was actually a fun trip. The 4 hour car ride wasn't bad at all. Thank goodness for the dvd player in our car. Kara & Jack slept in a double bed together and they slept pretty well. It helped that they were worn out both nights and promptly crashed after hitting the bed. Grant did pretty well also. He enjoyed exploring new places.

Jack, Karee, & Karee's friend Jason went to the Detroit Autoshow. This was their second time going. Jack was in heaven with all of the cars and the fact that you can sit in the cars, etc. He would just sit next to random people & start talking about the cars and making them laugh. Karee noticed the Toledo Blade following Jack for a little while, taking pictures & asking what his favorite car was. Sure enough, Jack made the paper the next day. It talks about him in the article then there is a link to the picture gallery & Jacks the first picture. We stopped in Toledo on our way home and picked up a paper also. Last year he was on the news.
http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100117/BUSINESS02/1170341

While they were at the auto show Kara, Grant & I went to the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum. The museum was neat we stayed in the preschool area which was enclosed and they had various activities like a couple of Lego tables, water tables, an area to wash and scrub a rock, firetruck to play in, kitchen area with an above "loft", and a few other things for the kids to do. We met Kristin & Max and Becky & Owen. It was a lot of fun since I have known these girls for almost 3 years but we never met face to face. At first, I think the kids were overwhelmed by the other kids there but once we were there for a bit they all played and had a good time. They had such a good time that Kara threw herself on the ground when it was time to leave and didn't want to walk the 1 1/2 blocks to the parking garage. I had to try to carry her and push Grant in a stroller. Meanwhile, one lady walking her dog decided it was appropriate to shout out "wait until she's 4". WTF was that? No one asked you so keep on walking and make sure to pick up your dogs shit.
Becky & Owen:

Kristin & Max:

Kara & Grant at the Lego table:That evening we let the kids swim in the pool for just a bit and they had a great time. We didn't bring their floaties but they still had a blast. Kara has no fear of the water whatsoever. Jack was a bit nervous at first but by the time we left he was holding his head under the water. After swimming, we went to Jason & Missy's house. Karee went to high school with Jason and he is one of his best friends. Missy made us spaghetti & meatballs, salad and brownies. I was afraid that our kids were going to be wild since they had no nap and were very tired. Kara had a fit at first because we left Boo at the hotel but she ended up coming around and eating her dinner. Jack was very good!

I hope this was the first trip of many throughout their childhood!

For hire

Everyone gets to the point where they admit defeat, throw in the towel, wave the white flag...You know that feeling when you must hire help. I am now in the market for hiring help. I have realized I cannot get through my day without the assistance of someone important. The reason for this is before 8:30am I had been up every 2 hours with Grant, had Kara throwing a fit because she didn't like her pants, Libby ate a poopy diaper - vomited the diaper - ate the vomit and then vomited one last time and Grant had a blowout from his diaper to his ankles. Running late on a Monday morning has helped me come to realize that I need to hire a professional ass scratcher. Because folks, there are days I have no time to scratch my own.

Posting by Grant

"So this is the Aunt Cathy my mommy told me about. Jack was so out of control! With "spirited" kids such as he, any change in normal routine causes chaos. He certainly proved that point this Christmas. Overall, it was nice. We didn't have too much running around to do. Went to mom & dad's on Christmas day where we had lots of good food and spent the night. The kids got so much stuff my toy room is out of control! It is nice to not have to take Jack to preschool in the mornings though. I do enjoy the break but honestly, its so much work to get the kids up, fed, dressed by 8:30am daily.

Jack got about everything he asked Santa for. His favorite gift was the Crayola glow station. It is really cool! He enjoyed writing a thank you note to put with Santa's milk & cookies.

As we approach Kara's 2nd birthday, her personality is really starting to shine. She told me today that she was funny and she got a kick out of that.

Grant is just an angel and tends to go with the flow...whatever that may be at the time! His top tooth finally broke through the gum and the other will be right behind it shortly!

First sleepover

Jack had his first sleepover and we decided to have Alex & Cameron come up and stay. We had a blast!! Mr Uncle (as Cameron called Karee) took the 3 boys and Kara to see A Christmas Carol in 3d. He said they were really good at the movies. I baked gingerbread cookies while they were at the movie and let the kids decorate them when they got back. They had a lot of fun doing that! We had pizza then the kids just played. Cameron did get upset around 9:15 and wanted his mom & dad but I think he was just tired. We turned a movie on and all 3 boys laid on the living room floor in sleeping bags where they fell asleep.

This morning we had chocolate chip pancakes and bacon. It doesn't matter if they nap early or late...evenings are just WILD. It is so hilarious when I take a few moments to step back and realize what is going on. I have gotten accustomed to the madness and don't realize it. A typical evening here usually goes a little something like this:

The 2 dogs play tug of war with their rope toy and they growl and jump around..that in itself is very loud.

Then we have Princess squealing and/or being dramatic. If she gets too dramatic she cries until she vomits. Super.

We have Jack who just never stops talking. He is like a Jack Russell Terrier. The mouth and feet never stop moving.

Grant who is new to the art of crawling is constantly crawling into walls, under the tables and bonking his head.

The tv is usually blaring too so it can be heard over the other noises.

It is the moments when we have friends over and Karee and I are sitting calmly talking that we realize how insane our house it. One of our friends doesn't have any kids. Every time he comes in town, he makes it a point to come visit us. I think that is his dose of birth control. Go to the Brown house to see the madness then he definitely wont want kids for another 6 months at least!

Damn Cat

The vets office think our cats name is Fred. The first thing she said to me when she woke up Saturday morning was "I want Jack". Those 2 really have a special bond and it shows on both ends. Jack asked me why we needed Grant because Kara makes us laugh enough.

We went to visit a friend yesterday who is having a rough time. Jack thought my friends were my cousins. There were some older boys there (8 years old) and Jack got his first taste of older kids not wanting to be bothered by a young kid. He is so used to his cousins who dote all over the little kids. There were a few tears shed but over all Jack pulled through like a big boy.

After visiting, we went to get our Christmas tree. Jack had a ton of fun and at first he said that all the trees were too small. He just wasn't satisfied with any of them. Karee and I found a tree we liked and Jack said NO way. Then Austin (who was there selling trees) went over to the tree that Karee and I liked and Jack suddenly felt that was the perfect tree! He really had a ton of fun this year with the Christmas tree.

We had our first dusting of snow this morning. Jack was so excited to see the snow this morning. After school on our way home, Jack wanted to know who made snow. Karee would have gone into a long explanation about precipitation. I just said "God makes it". Jack wanted to know if God was my cousin. He's so hilarious!

Lots to be thankful for

Thanksgiving wasn't painfully busy as it usually is in years past. We decided this year to just spend it with Karee's family and then next year we will spend it with my family. It was so nice not to have to rush down to Cincinnati just to rush back up here. The kids got naps, we got our Christmas decorations out, etc.

The Friday before, Jack went to Mike's for the weekend. Jack wanted to make sure that I didn't forget to feed everyone. He told me that I had 2 choices, to feed Kara & Grant. Then choice 3 was to feed Holly, choice 4 was to feed Libby and choice 5 was to shut Kara & Grant's doors at night. Without Jack reminding me, the rest of the family would not eat ;)

After dinner is usually a crazy time in our house. The dogs always play tug with their rope toy which is loud because they growl and bark. The kids are usually playing and that is loud. I don't realize how crazy it is until someone else is here. And you are trying to talk and you can't between the kids, the dogs, the tv blaring...to us this is all normal. To someone with no animals or kids, I am sure it seems like a mad house. I dont mind that kind of chaos as long as everyone is happy! We have some pretty cute and smart kids which makes us very thankful around here.

Rain Makes Us Crazy

It was so rainy here yesterday and I think will be the rest of the week. The problem is - it makes us crazy. Not sure if it makes everyone feel lethargic so the only way to counteract that is to be out of control...to fight the urge to sleep. The kids were fighting over a toy yesterday and Kara was getting so upset as she is screaming MINE that she turns around and hits me. Now wait a minute - I am not sure if she was hitting me because I wasn't getting the toy for her, maybe because I had a smirk on my face (hey, it was funny) or maybe because she didn't feel like walking around the coffee table to hit Jack.
I am always early when I take Jack to school and pick him up. I am usually about 10 min. early. I leave myself enough time to get the double stroller out of the car, unfold it, put Kara & Grant in it and walk into school. There was a really bad accident and I sat on I-70 for 20 min and ended up being 10 min. late in getting Jack. I hate being late and I was starting to have a sense of panic. My heart rate had increased some and I thought about being one of those idiots who drives on the shoulder to get to the exit (hey I was less than a mile away and at a standstill). No fear, I waited my turn but was super anxious.
Libby has been doing better with house training but still has about 1 accident in the evening. Much better than before but still a nuisance. I think it is due to the fact that I am utilizing her crate a ton more than I used to and she doesn't have the chance to go in the house. I certainly hope she learns this quickly. I haven't even tried to teach her anything else (besides sit) because house training is my top priority.
I have been running 3 miles every afternoon. Typically, Kara and Grant go upstairs for a nap after lunch. Jack stays up about an hour later than they do and I run while he plays or colors. Yesterday he was making a snake with his markers and they went all the way across the toy room. He was very proud. He also went through his entire day at school but he was Miss Wendy and I was one of the teachers. I had a great day at preschool with Jack as my teacher :)

The power of please

Jack is so hilarious and makes me laugh every day. He informed me of a few things today. First, he informed me that yesterday Kara had melted poop. She had an accident on the living room floor. The good thing is - Karee steam cleaned the carpets after that mess.

Today, Jack and I always talk about his day at school. He said that Devon wouldn't move and Jack got upset. I asked him if he asked Devon nicely and he said "yes, I said Get out of my way please". I explained to Jack that this was not a nice way to ask. He said "but i said please and thats nice so its ok". He also informed me that Miss Wendy had a discussion with him about it and that he needs to say please. He told me that he just doesn't like to say excuse me and would rather say get out of my way please. So, using Jack's method of thinking you could say "go eat shit and die please" if someone ticks you off. Hmm, I think I like Jacks way of thinking!

Coffee, please step away until I get it

There is nothing like starting your day 10 minutes before the alarm goes off to dog poo and pee on the bedroom floor. Yep, the aroma of poo jolts me out of bed much faster than any alarm. I picked it up with tissue and put it in the toilet. Guess what happens then - yep the toilet gets clogged and starts to over flow. No problem, 6am and mopping the bathroom floor with bleach. This is better than any way to wake up. Take Libby outside and some animal got into the trash and there are pieces of chicken carcass all over the porch. Not to mention, Holly got into the same carcass the night before. This was probably a coyote or something. So, I turn the coffee pot on and go upstairs while anxiously awaiting that first cup of coffee. It's the only thing that makes it worth waking up. Yes, in case I haven't mentioned it - I am addicted to coffee. Grant woke up which is fine - he had been asleep since 8 last night. 20 minutes later I came downstairs to get my coffee and low and behold, Libby peed on the kitchen floor. I decided she needed to stay outside for awhile. I finally get that first cup of coffee after I feed Grant his oatmeal. He was crawling on the floor stalking me as I was going to get the coffee because he wanted to be held. All of this before 6:45 am.

This afternoon went pretty well. The kids napped and i ran 3 miles on the treadmill which helped me. The frustrating part is typically when I am making dinner and cleaning up. It was a very loud dinner. 1 or all of the kids were crying at various times during the dinner. Kara is wearing Dora the Explorer undies around the house. She had a wedgie and I tried to fix them and she screams NO and gave herself a wedgie. It is hilarious seeing her run around with her underwear in her crack and her chubby butt cheeks as she walks around. I think she will wear thongs when she gets older.

The drama

There's always DRAMA going on here.

Drama over the cat, drama over the tv, drama over the dogs. Today took the cake. Jack always wants to know as soon as he gets out of school what we are having for lunch. I was throwing out some suggestions and he shot all of them down. He said "how about mac and cheese". I told him I was out of mac and cheese (and not to mention he just had it for dinner last night at my parents). He started whining - I tried to remind him of rule 3 (use speaking words). So then Jack exclaims "You are ruining my life because you won't give me mac and cheese for lunch". Hilarious!

Ahh, sweet relief

Ever since the start of all of our illnesses, Grant was back on a newborn schedule which means waking every 3 to 4 hours to eat. It was really wearing me out because I was not getting more than 2 to 3 hours sleep at a time. And being sick on top of it - it took a toll on me. Last night he slept 10 hours straight which is just what I needed!

Karee let me buy a used treadmill. I love having it in the house and I dont have to plan my day around going to the Y. Plus its a pain to get the kids in and out of the car multiple times a day. No, I can use it when they are napping and I can take my time. I can wear shirts that are a little too tight around my belly (think Chris Farley fat guy in a little coat routine), I can allow my belly blub to flow freely in the wind.....lol. It was a good investment that will save us $700/year.

Kara is talking more and more and using short sentences. I used to think that she would be very calm and laid back. As we approach the (terrible) 2's, she is more and more active. All of us will be sitting in the evening watching tv (yes, even Jack sits still) and Kara's running around from person to person. She is giving hugs, being loud, "KITTY", petting the dogs, jumping on Jack, "KITTY", sits on daddy's lap for 2.5 seconds, "KITTY"!

Jack had a great progress report from school. He is excelling at almost everything that a 4 year old should be and he is soooo much better behaved this year. He's like a celebrity at school. As we walk in he's waving and saying hi to various teachers and staff. Everyone seems to know Jack. Some will give him a hi five, others a hug.

Grant is perfecting the art of crawling. He gets so excited though that often times his legs go faster than his arms and he ends up doing a face plant on the carpet. That doesn't stop him - he gets right back up and gets to his destination. I think he is the best baby ever. He is always so happy. I think he just likes to show off his dimple truth be told.

Why?

Kara get down off the chair. After everyone took long naps, we decided on Friday night to carve our pumpkins. Karee always does a great job and takes a lot of pride in his pumpkin carving skills. During all of this, Libby found and ate a wasp. I had to call our vet for the dose of Benadry. The Benadryl did not make her sleepy. I was planning on giving her a dose daily if it did just in case she decided to eat another wasp or stinging insect.Halloween went pretty well. With the exception of Princess not feeling well so she screamed...she screamed a lot....she screamed over everything. That high pitched scream makes me want to run away. It's always, always worse when Karee is around. I have NO IDEA why...
Kara on sugar. We had never seen Kara all hyped up on sugar before. She is typically calm with moments of insanity thrown in here and there. Last night she was blabbering like a fool, running, running into walls, hugging on Jack constantly, then when Fred came out she gets all Lenny (from Mice & Men) on us. "KITTY!" She yells as her bottom jaw protrudes out (with the big gap in the middle) and she has to pull the cats paws, kiss him on the lips, wants to hold him very tight by his neck, her entire body shakes with excitement. Easy Lenny, easy!

My dad asked me why Kara wasn't dressed as a princess this year. I had to explain to him that Kara is a princess the other 364 days of the year...she wanted to be something different for Halloween. We settled on the tiger costume for her. Jack was Woody from Toy Story and Grant was a bumble bee. The kids did seem to enjoy their scavenger hunt. It was very short because it was cold and I didn't want everyone out for long. It sucked the life out of the 5 of us though. Had we done anything else, we might all be in a coma. We all went to bed at 9 or was it 8...hell with the time change I have no idea but I believe it was early for us!

First day of documenting insanity

I have grown as a person since the rootbeer is the root of all evil blog. I figured a blog was the better way to to document all of my kids quirks, funny sayings, crazy moments, thing that make me want to have a meltdown, you get the picture. My disclaimer is I love my kids. I love that I have the opportunity to stay home with them. However, there are some days that make me want to throw myself on the floor and have a tantrum with them.

So, we have been dealing with Grant having H1N1 this week. He did make my morning when he started crawling after a rawhide dog bone. Jack woke up with a fever and feeling bad. After a little while he started to get sick. He made it in the potty (i praised him for making it in the potty) and God love him when he said (in between hurls) "thank you for saying good job". He then decided to hide out underneath the crib in an attempt to make himself feel better. Don't they say animals go off and hide before they die? Jack must have felt really lousy!

So today has been crazy. 2/3 of the kids have snot running down their faces constantly. 2/3 of the kids have fevers up and down. 1 child (no names) is hitting terrible 2's and is getting so sassy! I found that particular child who shall not be named sitting in a dry bathtub with the cat. When I finally got the chance to take a nap (because for some reason wiping all these snotty faces happened to get me sick too) I woke up to puppy pee on the floor and Karee bringing in groceries. Apparently, Libby jumped on him which resulted in a beer bottle breaking on the floor and beer spilling all over the floor.
Tonights bedtime ritual has begun with me breaking up a fight over the cat. Pulling legs, tail and head..I wonder if it is like the wishbone and whoever gets the bigger piece of the cat will win.

Thank goodness it is almost bedtime. Let the madness continue tomorrow!
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v10.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3De0491eed86eb3ade%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331524266%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D72E182185F63210815306B1A9C8AA3EF1BA2286F.78F6DDA5095C3ADC8212337FE9F105C99BFE0A5B%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3De0491eed86eb3ade%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DhYZOpFtrA-aYHXsPd2TjJ7-PL7U&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />
